UPDATE: Two Deadly Shootings, Six Injured in Violent Week Across Newark

Authorities in Essex County are investigating a deadly afternoon shooting that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man in Newark’s Central Ward on Thursday.

 

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting remains under an active and ongoing investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that shortly before 2:15 p.m., a ShotSpotter device activated in the area of Springfield Avenue and Broome Street, prompting a large police response. 

When officers arrived, they located three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds near Springfield Avenue and Livingston Street.

 

Emergency medical personnel transported the victims to University Hospital for treatment. 

Family and friends identified one of the victims as 25-year-old Nyree Williams-Collins, who was pronounced dead following the shooting. 

The  suspect reportedly fired multiple rounds in the direction of the victims.
 

Police secured and closed off the area as detectives processed the scene for evidence.

 

The fatal shooting comes amid a troubling week of gun violence in the city.

 

Earlier Thursday, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, officers were dispatched around 12:15 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 400 block of South 13th Street. 

An adult male was found suffering from a gunshot wound and transported to University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

 

On Tuesday evening, just before 9 p.m., police responded to shots fired near 12th Avenue and 13th Avenue along Littleton Avenue, near Newark Collegiate Academy following a basketball game. 

Three victims — including a 16-year-old male — were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Earlier that same Tuesday morning, shortly before 10:15 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of 144 Huntington Terrace. 

An adult male suffering multiple gunshot wounds, including a head injury, was pronounced dead. A suspect was detained in that incident.

All of the shootings remain under investigation as authorities work to determine motives and identify those responsible.

 

The recent incidents have heightened concerns among residents about safety as law enforcement continues efforts to curb the violence.
