Family and friends have confirmed that Sandra Shanks, 60, of Newark, who was previously reported missing, was found deceased inside her home. Officials have not released details regarding the cause of death, and at this time, there are no reports of suspicious activity.
Ms. Shanks was the subject of a public missing-persons alert after she failed to return home. She was last seen at her place of employment, Marion P. Thomas School, at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Officials at the charter school became concerned after Shanks failed to report to work without notifying administrators. When she missed a second consecutive day, sources close to the investigation said a wellness check was requested at her residence.
Family members and friends told RLS Media that Ms. Shanks dedicated years of service to Newark’s school community.
She briefly worked at Weequahic High School, later held a position at a local restaurant in Newark’s South Ward, and most recently worked at Marion P. Thomas School, where she was loved by teachers, administrators, and coworkers throughout the building.
When she was initially reported missing, Newark Police said Ms. Shanks was 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds.
She was last seen wearing a red coat, black flats, a curly wig, and glasses. At the time, authorities stated that her mental and physical conditions were good.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing, and no foul play was immediately reported.
From the RLS Media information center, we extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sandra Shanks during this difficult time.
