Brutal Cold Brings Dangerous Wind Chills to Newark, North Jersey Region

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

We are waking up to brutally cold conditions across Newark and the North Jersey region this Sunday, and it’s the kind of cold that demands respect.
Any exposed skin for even a short period of time can be at risk for frostbite, so please take this as a serious warning.

Good morning and happy Sunday. If you thought Saturday was bad, stepping outside this morning will feel like something entirely different.

In downtown Newark, temperatures are sitting around 6 degrees, but strong winds are driving wind chill values down to between -3 and -7 degrees

And that bitter cold is not letting up much at all today. While we may see some sunshine, it will do nothing to warm the air.

Gusty winds will continue to make conditions feel harsh and dangerous throughout the day.

Even with a heavy winter coat, gloves, hats, and warm socks, today is one of those days where the cold simply cuts through everything.

If you can, the best advice is to stay indoors. If you must go out, limit your time outside and move quickly from a warm car directly into a warm building or home.

According to the National Weather Service:

Today:

Sunny and cold, with a high near 15. Wind chill values between -5 and -15. Blustery, with a northwest wind of 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.

Tonight:

Mostly clear, with a low around 8. Wind chill values between -5 and zero. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

If you’re heading out for morning worship or any essential travel, dress as warmly as possible and take extra precautions. Again, the key is minimizing exposure — get in and out quickly.

Have a safe Sunday, stay warm, and please look out for one another out there.
