Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a Newark man Wednesday evening, officials said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting occurred on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., a Newark police patrol unit traveling northbound on Bergen Street was approached by an unidentified woman who reported that a man had been shot.
Officers responded to the 800 block of Bergen Street, where they located a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as Alkadeem Dortch, 29, of Newark.
Dortch was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:46 p.m.
The investigation remains active and ongoing, and no additional details have been released at this time.
