Deteriorating weather conditions across Newark and the North Jersey region have prompted officials to close schools as a powerful winter storm continues to impact the area and is expected to linger into Monday.
Newark Public Schools announced that all district schools, along with the Central Office, will be closed on Monday, January 26, 2026, due to inclement weather and hazardous conditions.
The decision comes as the region experiences ongoing snowfall, icy conditions, and dangerously cold temperatures.
Forecasters say today’s storm system is expected to persist into Monday, creating unsafe travel conditions on roadways and sidewalks, with the potential for additional snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
Officials say the closure is intended to prioritize the safety of students, families, and staff as crews continue to address snow-covered roads and other weather-related hazards.
Families are encouraged to monitor official school communications and local weather updates for further information as conditions continue to evolve.
