A fatal three-alarm fire that ripped through an occupied residential home Monday morning on High Street in Rahway remains under active investigation, city officials confirmed.

Fire crews were dispatched to 1583 High Street at approximately 10:20 a.m. after reports of a structure fire at a 2½-story, wood-frame home.

Upon arrival, responders encountered heavy fire conditions on the first and second floors, with flames extending into the attic and visible fire along the exterior of the building.

Officials said police officers at the scene were forced to restrain an occupant who attempted to re-enter the burning home.
