UPDATE: Woman Killed in Caldwell Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash

Caldwell

By: Richard L. Smith

An investigation is underway after a woman was killed in a two-vehicle hit-and-run incident Friday evening in Caldwell, according to a statement released by county prosecutors.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Caldwell Police Director Nichele L. Patrick said the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on January 16, in the 400 block of Bloomfield Avenue.

Police responded to reports of a pedestrian struck and found 56-year-old Sharon Thomas of Caldwell unconscious in the roadway.

She was transported to Mountainside Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 7:22 p.m.

Investigators say witnesses reported that Thomas had just exited an NJ Transit bus and was crossing Bloomfield Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle.

The driver reportedly stopped, exited the vehicle, looked at the victim lying in the roadway, then returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.

Authorities said a second vehicle also struck Thomas while she was in the roadway. That driver pulled over and remained at the scene.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional information has been released at this time.
