A winter weather warning remains in effect this Saturday morning as heavy snow that moved in Friday night continues to impact Newark and the North Jersey region.

The storm brought slick roads, snow-covered sidewalks, and reports of snowfall totals nearing 10 inches in parts of Newark, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to taper off by late morning, with the heaviest bands clearing between 10 and 11 a.m.

The timing of the storm — arriving on a Saturday, means fewer commuters on the road, giving state and local crews additional time to clear main routes.

However, cleanup continues across downtown Newark and surrounding neighborhoods.

Early morning temperatures remain frigid, hovering near the low 20s, creating cold wind chills for residents heading out to shovel.

The National Weather Service reports a 30 percent chance of lingering snow before 10 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a steady temperature near 30 degrees. North winds of 6 to 10 mph may gust up to 20 mph.

Tonight, skies will turn partly cloudy, with lows near 20 degrees.

Some areas also experienced periods of mixed precipitation and a light glaze of ice, and officials warn that roads and sidewalks may remain slippery into the afternoon.
