Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. is advising residents to prepare for a winter storm expected to begin this afternoon, with snowfall forecast to start after 2 p.m. and continue into Saturday morning.
Forecasters predict between 5 and 9 inches of accumulation across the city.
City officials are urging motorists to avoid traveling through areas prone to flooding and to use caution on local roadways.
A list of streets that may experience flooding has been identified by the city, and drivers are reminded to steer clear of those locations when possible.
Residents are also asked to comply with “No Parking on Snow-Covered Roadways” restrictions posted throughout Newark.
Motorists should look for the designated signage to determine streets where parking is prohibited during snowfall so plows and emergency vehicles can operate safely.
The Department of Public Safety is coordinating responses to flooding, burglar alarms, and other weather-related incidents through the combined efforts of Police, Fire, and the Office of Emergency Management.
Officials are also reminding residents to secure outdoor furniture, awnings, refuse, and building materials ahead of the storm.
For fire safety, authorities advise residents to use flashlights instead of candles in the event of a power outage.
Non-emergency, weather-related incidents may be reported by calling 973-733-6000.
