Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that authorities are investigating a fatal fire that occurred Tuesday morning in Bayonne.
According to officials, the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 23, 2025, at a multi-story building located at 537 Avenue A.
When firefighters arrived, they observed smoke coming from a third-floor apartment.
During firefighting operations, crews discovered an unresponsive woman inside a bedroom of the unit.
The victim was later identified as Irene Clark, 82, of Bayonne.
She was transported to Hudson Regional Hospital in Bayonne, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 a.m.
The fire remains under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department. Authorities said foul play is not suspected at this time.
