Good morning, New Jersey.

We’re waking up to a soggy and unseasonably warm start to the end of the week across Newark and the North Jersey region, but don’t let the mild temperatures fool you, conditions will turn sharply colder as the day goes on.

If you’re heading out early for work or catching the bus, an umbrella and rain gear will be essential for much of the morning commute.

While it feels warm to start the day, temperatures are expected to drop steadily, pushing the region back into frigid territory by later today.

As of early this morning, temperatures in downtown Newark were around 54 degrees.

The area remains under an AccuWeather alert for heavy rain, strong winds, and potentially hazardous conditions.

Gusty winds are expected to pick up as the day progresses, with some gusts reaching between 50 and 60 mph. Residents are advised to secure holiday decorations and any loose outdoor items.

Most of the rainfall is expected during the morning hours, tapering off by midday. However, conditions are expected to worsen as strong, blustery winds move in behind the rain.

According to the National Weather Service, steady showers will continue with temperatures holding near 53 degrees early on.

South winds around 15 mph could gust up to 26 mph, with a 100 percent chance of precipitation. Rainfall totals are expected to remain under a tenth of an inch.

Looking ahead to Friday, showers — and possibly a thunderstorm — are forecast before 1 p.m., followed by a continued chance of rain.
