The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation into another deadly shooting in Newark’s South Ward that claimed the life of a man late Friday night.
Authorities say a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the area, prompting a large police response.
Newark police were dispatched at approximately 9:58 p.m. on Friday, December 12, to an apartment located in the 300 block of Wainwright Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a man later identified as Mr. Malcom Coperning, 35, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Coperning was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:37 p.m.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Officials have not released additional details at this time.
