Code Blue Issued in Essex County With Weeklong Cold Snap Ahead

Essex County

By: Richard L. Smith

Essex County officials have activated Code Blue protocols as dangerously cold weather settles into the region this week.

County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones announced that Code Blue procedures will be in effect from Monday, December 1 at 8 p.m. through Tuesday, December 9 at 8 a.m., covering the overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day.

A county official said in a press release that Code Blue alerts are issued when temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees or when harsh winter weather creates unsafe conditions for those without shelter.

Residents can find a list of participating shelters and warming stations by viewing the graphic provided or by visiting www.nj211.org.

DiVincenzo emphasized the importance of offering protection to the county’s most vulnerable.

Providing our homeless residents with a warm place to stay during extreme weather is essential for their safety and well-being, he said, expressing gratitude to all shelters and warming sites partnering in the effort.

Sheriff Jones echoed that message, noting that severe cold puts homeless individuals at serious risk.

He thanked local agencies for opening their doors and providing safe, warm spaces for anyone in need during the overnight hours.

When a Code Blue is activated, a network of daytime warming stations operated by Essex County and its municipalities becomes available, along with overnight shelters run by community organizations.

These warming stations may include public libraries, senior centers, civic facilities, schools, houses of worship, firehouses, and first-aid buildings.

While warming stations typically serve residents during the day, overnight accommodations are offered through designated shelters.

Shelters that normally require occupants to leave during the day will suspend that rule so individuals can remain inside.
