Several Injured in Early-Morning Plainfield Building Fire

Plainfield

By: Richard L. Smith

Plainfield fire officials are investigating the cause of a fast-moving overnight blaze that left several people hospitalized, including one victim in life-threatening condition.

According to preliminary information, firefighters were dispatched to the 300 block of West Front Street just before 1:10 a.m. after multiple 911 calls reported a fire inside a four-story building.

Upon arrival, crews observed heavy flames showing from the structure and immediately struck a second and then a third alarm to bring in additional manpower.

Firefighters stretched multiple hose lines to knock down the flames and forced their way into the building after witnesses reported that residents were trapped inside.

Approximately four individuals were pulled from the structure, officials said.

At least one victim suffered severe, life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders performed CPR at the scene before the individual was transported to a nearby hospital.

The conditions of the remaining victims had not been released as of 4 a.m. Sunday.

Crews were able to bring the blaze under control shortly before 3:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains active and under investigation by the Plainfield Police Department. Union County officials, including the Prosecutor’s Office, have been notified, though it is unclear whether county investigators responded to the scene overnight.

More details are expected as officials release additional information.
