Authorities in Somerset County are investigating a deadly incident that unfolded Sunday afternoon at a home on Mastogen Drive in Somerville.
According to officials, police responded to the residence around 1:08 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
Officers attempted to make contact with the occupants but were unsuccessful. Bridgewater Township Police assisted during the initial response.
Due to the circumstances, the Somerset County SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. SWAT officers arrived around 2:00 p.m. and again tried to make contact with anyone inside.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts, team members entered the home, where they confronted and detained an adult male.
During a further search of the residence, SWAT officers found a deceased adult female.
The male was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.
Detectives from the Somerville Police Department, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office responded to conduct a full investigation.
Officials say the case remains in its early stages as a death investigation.
No additional details will be released until investigators and the Medical Examiner’s Office complete their preliminary findings.
