Metal Detectors Stop Student From Bringing Loaded Gun Into Newark Charter School

A tense situation took place at a Newark charter school Wednesday morning when a student was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to bring a loaded handgun into the building.

According to a statment released by Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, the incident occurred around 9:06 a.m. at Great Oaks Charter School, located at 17 Crawford Street. 

Police responded after security personnel detected a firearm as the student, a 17-year-old male, entered the school.

 

Officials said the student triggered both the building’s metal detector and a handheld metal detector wand, prompting a search that led to the discovery of the loaded handgun inside his book bag.
 

The teen was immediately taken into custody without further incident. 

No injuries were reported, and authorities have not released additional details at this time.
