Shots Fired on Newark–Irvington Border Sparks Police Standoff

A tense early-morning incident on the Newark–Irvington border had police from both municipalities responding after a suspect reportedly fired shots, then ran inside a nearby home to hide, officials said.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. near 663 Springfield Avenue. 

A ShotSpotter device detected gunfire and alerted Newark Police, prompting a heavy response to the area.

When officers arrived, they observed a male suspect running from the scene into a residence on the Irvington side of the border. 

Newark’s Shooting Response Team was called to lead the investigation, while the Emergency Response Team was also dispatched to assist in safely retrieving the barricaded suspect.

No serious injuries were reported in connection with the incident, which remains under active investigation.
