He was transported to a nearby hospital following the shooting but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police noted that city ordinances prohibit public access to parks between sunset and sunrise.

According to early reports, Diaz may have been asked to meet another individual at the park, though the circumstances remain unclear as the investigation continues.

The New Brunswick Police Department has urged anyone with information to contact its Detective Bureau at 732-745-5200. Rutgers University Police also reminded students, faculty, and staff that security escorts are available upon request to provide safe travel to vehicles, residences, or university transit stops by calling 732-932-7211.

The investigation into the shooting remains active, and authorities have not yet released a description of the suspect or suspects.
