UPDATE: Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Fatal Jersey City Shooting

Authorities in Hudson County announced that on Thursday, September 25, the Honorable Mitzy Galis-Menendez, P.J.S.C., sentenced a 41-year-old man to 25 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2023 shooting death of a woman in Jersey City.

Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello stated that Lucus Cooper, of Jersey City, previously pled guilty to one count of Aggravated Manslaughter in connection with the death of Temara King, which occurred on January 24, 2023.

The sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act.

The State was represented by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Jim Felix. Shortly after 7 a.m. on January 24, 2023, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots being fired on the third floor of 340 Bergen Avenue, HCPO officials say. 

Upon arrival, Hudson County officials said responding officers located a female victim – later identified as Temara King, 35, of Jersey City – with apparent gunshot wound(s).

She was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead just after 8 a.m., HCPO authorities said.
