According to information released by the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), this year’s theme, “Forward Together,” emphasizes unity, access, and equity in breastfeeding support.

The initiative stems from First Lady Tammy Murphy’s 2021 Nurture NJ Maternal and Infant Health Strategic Plan, which laid the groundwork for a comprehensive 2022–2027 breastfeeding strategy.

The plan is being carried out in partnership with the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium and NJDOH, with a focus on improving access to lactation services statewide.

As part of these efforts, NJDOH recently launched NJsupportsBreastfeeding.org, a multilingual website offering guidance, educational tools, and local resources for parents, families, health care professionals, and employers.

The site is available in 12 languages and provides information ranging from breastfeeding basics and workplace accommodations to county-level support services.

Health officials note that breastfeeding not only provides infants with vital nutrition and immunity but also lowers long-term health risks for mothers, including certain cancers, diabetes, and heart disease.

Recent data shows exclusive breastfeeding rates at hospital discharge in New Jersey have increased by 2% since 2020, while combination feeding rates have risen more than 10% during the same period. Gains have also been noted across Black, Hispanic, and Asian mothers.

With steady progress and expanded resources, state leaders say the goal is to ensure every New Jersey parent has access to the information and support needed to meet their breastfeeding goals.
