ALERT: National Weather Service Warns of Steamy Sunday in Newark

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

My family and friends in Newark began their Sunday morning with comfortable temperatures in the low 70s, but forecasters warn that New Jersey’s largest city is on track for another day of sweltering summer heat.
According to the National Weather Service, the thermometer will climb to 93 degrees, with humidity pushing the heat index to near 100.

At 6 a.m., residents around Bergen Street and Springfield Avenue in the Central Ward enjoyed a refreshing 73 degrees as many prepared for early worship services.

However, temperatures are expected to “be off to the races” as the morning progresses, officials said.

The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies through the afternoon before conditions shift.

By tonight, Newark faces a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with mostly cloudy skies and an overnight low around 66.

Meteorologists say relief is on the way after today’s heat wave. The rest of the week is expected to bring more comfortable weather, with highs staying in the mid-80s.

Officials urge residents to stay safe, hydrated, and cool during today’s peak heat hours.
