Officers were called to an apartment building on Neilson Street after receiving a complaint about a resident walking through the hallway with a knife.

Police located the woman inside her apartment and began speaking with her through a closed door, investigators said.

According to preliminary information, the woman later stepped into the hallway holding a knife.

Officers used pepper spray and a taser in an attempt to subdue her before one officer discharged his service weapon, striking her.

The woman was given first aid at the scene and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A knife was recovered at the location.
