A months-long investigation into contraband smuggling at Northern State Prison in Newark has led to a guilty plea from a former senior corrections officer, according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Werner Gramajo, 48, of Newark, admitted to conspiring to commit official misconduct after supplying an inmate with cash, clothing, jewelry, food, and other prohibited items in exchange for monthly payments.

The investigation was conducted by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) following evidence uncovered by the New Jersey Department of Corrections’ Special Investigations Division.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend Gramajo serve 364 days in the Essex County jail, followed by probation.

He must also forfeit approximately $6,000 in illicit proceeds, permanently give up his public position, and is barred from future public employment. Sentencing is scheduled for September 22, 2025.

According to OPIA, Gramajo admitted during his plea hearing to receiving $500 per month from the inmate, totaling about $6,000 over the course of the scheme.
