New Jersey

By: Richard L. Smith

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed that a magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, around 10:22 p.m.  this evening.

Residents across North Jersey and as far south as Trenton reported feeling the tremor, with many in Harrison taking to social media to share their surprise over the shaking.

Residents in upstate New York as far away as Westchester and Rockland also felt tremors.

While no damage or injuries have been reported, the quake served as a startling reminder that earthquakes, though rare in New Jersey, can still be felt across a wide area.

The USGS recorded the quake at 0 km northeast of Hasbrouck Heights, making it a shallow event likely responsible for the widespread reports of shaking.

This is a developing story.
