According to a statement released by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), authorities are investigating a deadly police-involved shooting that took place Tuesday, July 29, in the West Berlin section of Berlin Township, Camden County.

Preliminary details indicate that two detectives from the New Jersey State Police, assigned to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, encountered a man on Haddon Avenue near Bate Avenue as part of an ongoing investigation.

During the encounter, one of the detectives discharged his service weapon, striking the individual.

Following the shooting, law enforcement recovered a revolver at the scene.

First responders administered medical aid, and the man was transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m. His identity has not been released.

Under a 2019 state law (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107[a][2]), the Attorney General’s Office is mandated to investigate all deaths that occur during an encounter with a law enforcement officer in their official capacity or while the individual is in custody.

Such cases must be presented to a grand jury to determine whether evidence supports potential criminal charges against the involved officer or officers.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time.
