A 14-year-old boy has died following a tragic collision involving an e-bike and a vehicle in Somers Point on Thursday evening, local police confirmed.
According to a statement from the Somers Point Police Department, officers responded shortly before 8 p.m. to the area of Maryland Avenue and a nearby bike path after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a vehicle and a cyclist.
Emergency responders initially transported the teen to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s trauma unit in neighboring Egg Harbor Township.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to Cooper Trauma Center in Camden, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities identified the driver as a 47-year-old woman from Philadelphia.
Police said she was not injured in the crash, and her three juvenile passengers were also unharmed. Investigators do not believe that speed or alcohol were factors in the incident.
The Somers Point Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
No charges have been announced at this time.
