Injuries Reported in Early Morning Crash in Newark's West Ward

Newark Police are investigating the cause of an early morning crash that left at least one person injured in the city's West Ward on Saturday.

The incident occurred shortly before 1:25 a.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue and South 20th Street. Responding officers and emergency crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in a violent collision. 

One occupant was reportedly trapped inside one of the cars, prompting firefighters to use specialized tools to extricate the individual.

The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment. While the extent of their injuries has not been officially confirmed, no additional serious injuries were reported.

Authorities have debunked social media claims suggesting that the injured individual was a police officer, stating those rumors are unfounded.

The crash remains under active investigation.
