The blaze broke out just before 1:30 a.m. at 733-737 Main Avenue, located in the city’s commercial district.

According to officials, multiple 911 calls reported flames coming from the structure.

When crews arrived, they encountered thick smoke and heavy fire engulfing a three-story building with businesses on the ground level and apartments above.

Firefighters quickly stretched multiple hose lines and called for mutual aid from surrounding towns as the flames intensified.

The fire was elevated to a three-alarm status as it threatened to spread to neighboring apartment units.

Crews worked urgently to contain the blaze and prevent it from rapidly jumping to nearby structures.

During the response, at least three firefighters were transported to area hospitals for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Several cats were rescued from the apartments.

As of 4 a.m., the fire was partially under control, though hotspots remained.
