Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl in Newark’s South Ward, marking a case that's believed to be related to domestic violence.

According to police officials, the incident took place on Friday, June 27, just before 6 p.m., in the 100 block of Huntington Terrace.

Newark Police officers responded to reports of gunfire and arrived to find a teenage girl suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as Kayla Spivey, was transported to University Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Initially listed in severe condition, officials later confirmed she succumbed to her injuries in the days following the shooting.

The suspect, Mr. Amir Sanderson, 18, has been taken into custody and charged with purposeful murder in connection with the case.

Authorities believe the incident stemmed from a domestic-related dispute, as the victim and suspect were known to each other but not relatives.

While additional details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting have not been made public, the investigation remains active.

Law enforcement continues to gather evidence and is urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Newark Police Department.
