Franklin Township (Somerset)

A Somerset County man is facing federal charges in connection with the distribution of fentanyl and heroin that led to a fatal overdose, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced Monday.

A federal grand jury indicted Thomas Kane Miller, 40, of Somerset, on multiple drug-related charges, including possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and a fentanyl precursor (4-ANPP), and distribution of those substances resulting in death.

He also faces two additional counts of distribution of fentanyl and heroin.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident in October 2022, when Miller allegedly supplied a mixture of fentanyl and heroin to a victim who was later found dead in a Plainfield residence.

Investigators recovered wax folds containing drugs marked with a distinct stamp tied to Miller.

Communications between the two suggested a drug transaction had been arranged shortly before the overdose occurred.

Authorities say Miller was found in possession of additional drug packages with the same markings less than two weeks before the incident.

He is also accused of distributing fentanyl and heroin in separate incidents in Middlesex and Somerset counties in late 2022 and early 2023.

Miller’s initial court appearance and arraignment were scheduled for June 30, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Robert Kirsch in Trenton.

If convicted, the charge of drug distribution resulting in death carries a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life, along with a fine of up to $1 million.

The remaining drug distribution and possession charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The indictment is part of a broader push by federal authorities to address the ongoing fentanyl crisis in New Jersey and nationwide.
