The Irvington school community is in mourning following the tragic death of 16-year-old Ziyad Cook, a standout student-athlete at Irvington High School, who was fatally shot in Newark on June 26.
According to a statement issued by Irvington Schools Superintendent Dr. April Vauss, Ziyad’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his peers, teachers, coaches, and all who knew him.
A rising star both on and off the football field, Ziyad wore the number 33 jersey with pride as a member of the Irvington High School Blue Knights football team.
“Ziyad was not just a remarkable athlete; he was an inspiring young man who embodied the spirit of the Irvington High School Blue Knights,” Dr. Vauss wrote.
“His talent and determination made him a leader among his peers, and he was admired not only for his athletic prowess but also for his kindness and compassion.”
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Ziyad’s tragic death occurred just before 6 p.m. in Newark’s West Ward, where two juveniles were shot near 227 Brookdale Avenue, according to Essex County authorities.
Both victims were transported to University Hospital. Ziyad was pronounced dead later that evening at 9:19 p.m., while the second teenager remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities have not released details surrounding the motive or suspects involved, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is actively investigating.
Within the Irvington Township city limits, Ziyad’s absence is deeply felt. Known for his bright smile, uplifting spirit, and willingness to support his teammates, friends, and classmates, he leaves behind a legacy that educators say will not be forgotten.
“He had a unique ability to uplift those around him,” Dr. Vauss said. “Ziyad’s legacy will forever be remembered throughout the Irvington school community, and his impact will resonate for generations to come.”
As classmates prepare for the upcoming school year, district officials say grief counselors will be available to help students cope with the loss.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The Irvington Board of Education and school staff extend their deepest condolences to Ziyad’s family and are standing in solidarity with them during this unimaginable time.
Ziyad Cook will be remembered not only for his talent on the gridiron but for the compassion and leadership he showed each day—a young life lost too soon, but one whose memory will endure.
