Newark and the North Jersey region are finally seeing some relief after days of oppressive heat, waking up Thursday to slightly cooler, but still warm conditions. As of early morning, temperatures in downtown Newark hovered around 82 degrees, but unlike the past two days, forecasters say temperatures will begin to gradually drop as the morning progresses. The National Weather Service reports that by 9 a.m., the temperature is expected to fall to around 76 degrees. There is a 30 percent chance of showers early Thursday, mainly before 8 a.m., followed by partly sunny skies. The break in heat marks the end of a prolonged heatwave that gripped much of the state since the weekend, bringing record highs and air quality alerts. Thursday night will bring mostly cloudy skies with a slight 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to around 66 degrees. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the more manageable weather conditions and continue to stay safe as the region transitions out of the extreme heat.
