Fatal Fire Claims Life of Guttenberg Man, Arson Task Force Investigating

A 37-year-old man died Monday morning following a residential fire in Guttenberg, according to a statement released by Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

Officials said North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue crews responded shortly after 7:00 a.m. to reports of a fire at 6914 Park Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the third floor of the building.

During fire suppression efforts, crews discovered a male victim inside. He was later identified as Marcos Santa-Zayas, a Guttenberg resident.

Santa-Zayas sustained serious injuries and was transported to Palisades Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:20 a.m.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

At this time, authorities say foul play is not suspected.
