Newark and residents in North Kersey are enjoying a warm and pleasant start to the weekend with partly sunny skies and temperatures already reaching 70 degrees early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather today is expected to remain mostly sunny, with temperatures climbing to a high near 90 degrees.

Light winds will become more noticeable later in the day, shifting westward at 5 to 7 mph by the afternoon.

Saturday will offer the last comfortable stretch before a stretch of intense heat begins to build across the region.

Forecasters warn that conditions will grow increasingly humid throughout the day, setting the stage for an oppressive heat wave that will settle over the area beginning Sunday and continue through at least Thursday.

Temperatures overnight will remain warm, with lows around 73 degrees and partly cloudy skies.

As the region prepares for the coming heat, officials advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible.

For those without cooling, access to water or shaded areas will be essential.

The National Weather Service urges caution, as heat-related illnesses become more likely during prolonged periods of high temperatures.
