River Vale Public Schools has announced the appointment of Christopher Kirkby as the new principal of Woodside Elementary School, marking a meaningful homecoming for the longtime educator and former student of the district.

Kirkby, who once walked the halls of Roberge and Holdrum Schools as a child, will officially take over leadership of Woodside on July 1, following the departure of current principal Justin Jasper, who has served since 2021.
“Coming back to River Vale feels like a full-circle moment,” Kirkby said. “This district played a major role in shaping my future.”
The River Vale Board of Education approved his appointment at its June meeting. Kirkby brings 25 years of experience in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator.

Most recently, he served as principal of West Ridge Elementary School in Park Ridge and has also led schools in Edgewater and Demarest.
Superintendent Melissa Signore praised Kirkby’s deep commitment to student growth and community building. “His leadership will help continue the mission and values of Woodside School,” she said.
Throughout his career, Kirkby has focused on creating positive, inclusive environments that support both academic and emotional development.
He emphasized the importance of equipping students with not just knowledge, but also the resilience to face challenges.
Outside of his professional life, Kirkby is active in youth sports, coaching his children’s basketball and baseball teams and serving on local sports association boards.
He once wore a microphone while coaching during the Junior Little League World Series for an ESPN broadcast.

Kirkby holds a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University and a master’s in educational administration from Montclair State University.
His return to River Vale, officials said, is not just a professional step, but a meaningful testament to the impact a school district can have on its students.
