Newark police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who tricked a woman before snatching her puppy and driving off in a white Mercedes SUV earlier this week.

According to Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on June 10, 2025, along Merchant Street between Ferry and Clover streets.
The man reportedly approached the victim, expressed interest in buying her dog, and asked about its price.

But instead of completing a sale, the suspect suddenly grabbed the puppy and placed it in his vehicle.
In an apparent attempt to appease or distract the victim, he handed her several gold chains before speeding off.
Police noted the dog does not have a microchip for tracking or identification.
The suspect is described as a man of Indian descent with a tan complexion, short black hair, a short beard, and a gold tooth.
Anyone who can identify the man or provide information about the incident is urged to call Newark’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
Callers can remain anonymous.
