Newark Man Dies After Crashing Into Tree on I-78 On-Ramp

A Newark resident was killed Thursday night following a single-vehicle crash on an Interstate 78 on-ramp, according to New Jersey State Police.

Authorities said 48-year-old Gregory Williams was driving from Routes 1 & 9 onto I-78 westbound shortly before 10 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Emergency responders transported Williams to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Williams was widely known as the ‘Stephen A. Smith of Newark’ — a passionate voice who knew every angle of the sports world, from local matchups to national headlines.

His deep knowledge, sharp commentary, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a beloved figure throughout the Newark community.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by State Police.
