An adult male was hospitalized Sunday night after a fire broke out in a high-rise apartment building in Newark’s Upper West Ward, activating an emergency response from local firefighters.
According to a statement released by the Newark Police Department, the incident occurred around 11:24 p.m. on May 18, at 85 Manor Drive.
Firefighters at the scene encountered heavy smoke from the building’s eighth floor.
Emergency personnel located a man inside the affected apartment.
He was treated at the scene before being transported by EMS to University Hospital for evaluation due to smoke inhalation.
Officials said he is in stable condition and was the only resident who needed to be relocated.
No other injuries were reported, and the fire was brought under control without further incident.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.

Fire officials have not determined whether the blaze was accidental or involved any contributing hazards.
