A 97-year-old Jersey City resident has died from injuries he sustained in a house fire that broke out last week, officials announced Monday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they encountered flames coming from the basement apartment of the building.

While battling the fire, emergency crews found an injured man inside the basement unit.

He was identified as Mr. Albert Von Chorba, a longtime Jersey City resident. Von Chorba was initially taken to Jersey City Medical Center and later transferred to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center for advanced treatment.

Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead on Sunday, May 18, shortly after noon.

An investigation led by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, in conjunction with the Jersey City Fire Department, determined that the blaze likely originated from an electrical issue.
