Essex Sheriff Appoints New Acting Leaders, Including First African American Woman Chief

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is undergoing historic leadership changes, according to a statement released by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Amir D. Jones announced two major appointments aimed at strengthening the department’s operations and enhancing its service to the community.

Deputy Chief Arthur Jorge of the Newark Police Division has been named Acting Executive Undersheriff.

Jorge, who brings extensive operational experience and leadership, will oversee the Sheriff’s Office’s daily operations while on special assignment from the Newark Police Division.

He will report directly to Sheriff Jones.

Making department history, Captain Zipporah Thomas-Jenkins has been promoted to Acting Chief, becoming both the first woman and the first African American woman to hold the role.

Recognized for her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the community, Thomas-Jenkins will report to Acting Executive Undersheriff Jorge.

Sheriff Jones, the first African American to serve as Sheriff of Essex County, emphasized the significance of these appointments.

“These appointments reflect my commitment to building a capable, experienced leadership team that will serve the people of Essex County with integrity and purpose,” Jones said. “Together, they bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to public service that will help guide the Sheriff’s Office into a new era.”
