A Newark man has been convicted of resisting arrest after attempting a dramatic escape by leaping from a third-floor window, according to information released by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

On April 16, 2025, an Essex County jury found Hanzha Darby 36, guilty of one count of fourth-degree resisting arrest by flight following a trial overseen by Superior Court Judge Lori Grifa.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutors Gianna Sanguinetti and Tracy Dennis.
The incident occurred on May 16, 2024, when Newark Police officers arrived at an apartment located at 220 Irvine Turner Boulevard to take Darby into custody on an outstanding warrant.
Rather than surrender, Darby attempted to flee by jumping from a third-story window.
He sustained serious injuries as a result.
According to information presented during trial, Darby’s actions endangered himself and complicated law enforcement efforts.
Assistant Prosecutor Sanguinetti emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “We’re happy with the verdict and that justice has been served.”

Darby is scheduled to be sentenced on June 2, 2025, and faces up to 18 months in state prison.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office credited the Newark Police Department for their investigative work, which played a key role in securing the conviction.
