A tragic fire in Newark’s South Ward early Wednesday morning has left a 9-year-old girl dead and two other children hospitalized with serious injuries.
Authorities from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.

According to officials, the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. at a three-story residence located at 28 Astor Street.
Witnesses reported seeing flames erupting from the top floor of the building, prompting immediate calls to emergency services.
When fire crews arrived at the scene, they observed heavy fire coming from the third floor.
Firefighters entered the burning structure and discovered three children suffering from severe injuries caused by the fire.
The 9-year-old girl was rushed to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The two other injured children were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their current conditions have not yet been disclosed.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators are working to determine how the blaze began.
Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and local fire officials are actively examining the scene.
