A 22-year-old Newark man was arrested Saturday morning after officers on patrol observed the armed man.
Officers on patrol in the area of South 15th Street and 14th Avenue around 11 a.m., saw two men go into the backyard of an abandoned home on 15th Street.
Police than observed the two men entered the abandoned home through a window and exit within a few minutes armed.
When police approached them they fled in different directions.
Police arrested Rashad Dawes, 22, shortly after. The loaded weapon - a HKMP5 .22 caliber machine gun - equipped with a silencer, was recovered near the 400 block of South 14th Street.
Dawes was charged with resisting arrest, possession of a high capacity magazine, possession of a prohibited device, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.
The second man fled and remains at large. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered.
