CAUGHT ON CAMERA: East Orange Teacher Saves Child Choking on Water Bottle Top

An East Orange teacher's miraculous and quick actions to save a choking boy with a bottle cap lodged in his throat were caught on camera Wednesday.

Principal Tracey Watkins from the East Orange Community Charter School confirmed with RLS Media that there was an incident that occurred earlier this week -on April 6th-  in one of our 3rd-grade classes.

Principal Watkins said when a student attempted to open a water bottle with his teeth, the top popped off and lodged itself in his throat.

The video showed that the boy ran from his seat to a nearby room where he unsuccessfully attempted to spit the top from his mouth into what appeared to be a sink before running back into his classroom toward his teacher.

Rescue

According to Principal Watkins,  the student signaled to his teacher, Ms. JaNeice Jenkins, that he was choking, and she immediately administered the Heimlich maneuver and was successful in dislodging the top.

“This situation could have had a tragic outcome. As a school community, we are so grateful to and proud of Ms. Jenkins,” Principal Watkins said.

“Instead of freezing and panicking, she recalled what she learned in CPR training and used those skills to save a life.”

Principal Watkins and East Orange City officials thanked Ms. Jenkins for her courageous actions in saving the boy
