Police in Newark have launched an investigation into a shots-fired incident that resulted in a collision in Newark's downtown on Monday night.
Officials are trying to piece together the circumstances behind the incident, but according to preliminary information obtained at the scene, at approximately 9:26 p.m., emergency responders rushed to the intersection of Market Street and University Avenue after receiving reports of a crash.
Upon arrival, crews immediately began the process of extricating two victims trapped inside a severely damaged car that collided with a pole at that location.
Police say, shortly after University Hospital EMS Rescue 1 extricated the victims, they noticed a male inside the car suffering a gunshot injury. Police say there was a female suffering non-life-threatening injuries resulting from the crash.
According to police, prior to the collision, two vehicles were in the area exchanging rapid gunfire using - what they described as - "long guns" or rifles.
The gunfire exchange began at the ShopRite on Springfield Avenue police said.
It has not been confirmed if the victims involved in the crash car were participating in the shooting.
The victims were transported to University Hospital in stable condition. Police say two suspects fled the scene and remain at-large.
