Water Search Underway After Witnesses Report Vehicle Falling into Passaic River in Newark

Newark Emergency Responders are searching the Passaic River after witnesses say they observed a vehicle fall into the water after crashing in the city's North Ward.

According to preliminary reports, police were called to the vicinity of Grafton Avenue and McCarter Highway at around 3:45 a.m. to investigate reports of a crash.

Units arrived and requested divers from Lyndhurst and Wallington after they located evidence that a vehicle struck the guard rail but couldn't immediately find the vehicle in the water.

Witnesses say they saw several occupants make their way out of the vehicle and run from the scene.

As of 5:35 a.m., firefighters and search teams could not find the vehicle. It is not immediately clear if the vehicle floated down the Passaic River.
