Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose and Fire Chief Rufus L. Jackson announced that the Newark Fire Division will distribute and install free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as part of a door-to-door fire safety program in the South Ward tomorrow.
Officials say beginning at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 27th, members of the Newark Fire Division will visit neighbors within the area of Hawthorne Avenue, Bergen Street, Clinton Place and Yates Avenue to distribute and install the free detectors.
This program is a joint venture between the NFD, American Red Cross, South Ward Councilman John Sharpe James, The Hartford Insurance Company and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
Installation of the new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors will be made by members of the Newark Department of Public Safety, Vulcan Pioneers of New Jersey, United Civil Servants Association, Hispanic Firefighters Association and Councilman James’s office.
“We are pleased to extend updated fire safety equipment to our neighbors in the South Ward through this program, led by Councilman James, the American Red Cross, The Hartford and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers,” Director Ambrose said. “The early detection of smoke and carbon monoxide can save lives, which this important public safety giveaway addresses directly.”
“The Newark Fire Division is grateful for this opportunity to serve the South Ward residents by not only providing the free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, but by assisting with the installations,” Newark Fire Chief Jackson said. “Providing safety equipment is a major first step, but ensuring that the equipment is installed properly to prevent tragedies is an invaluable part of this program,” he added.
