BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Fatal Crash Closes Route 21 in Newark

Emergency responders are on the scene of a car crash with fatal injuries reported on Route 21 in Newark.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes near East Mill Street in Newark just before 5 p.m. sending emergency responders to the scene where they found a badly damaged vehicle that overturned then rolled over several times according to preliminary reports.

At least one person was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. There is at least one other person headed to University Hospital in serious condition.

Police have the highway closed and detoured for the active crash investigation at this time.

Plan an alternate or avoid if you can.

UPDATE NPD OFFICIAL STATEMENT 8:46pm: Units responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident at the location with a person being ejected from the vehicle. Units arrived and determined that this was a single vehicle accident. The driver was pronounced at the scene. A second occupant of the vehicle was transported to Rutgers Hospital in stable condition with head injuries.
