Today the United States Geological Survey confirmed that there was an earthquake recorded this afternoon in New Jersey.

According to the United States Geological Survey reports, the 1.7 magnitude earthquake occurred about 1.24 miles SSW of Morristown at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Monday.

Residents from nearby Morris Plains reported hearing thunder like sounds.
