Police officials in Newark are advising the public that vehicles left idling for more than three minutes in the city will be subject to summonses beginning Friday, September 1st.
According to a statement released by Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, more than 200 vehicles were stolen in Newark so far this year because they were left running and unattended.
Director Ambrose said this amounts to 15 percent of autos stolen in Newark so far this year.
“Despite extensive media coverage and public safety announcements, far too many motorists are needlessly putting themselves and others at risk with their negligence. We continue to urge drivers never to leave their car running and unattended, not even for a second, due to the danger of theft involved. Director Ambrose said”
"As the colder weather returns, more and more people leave their vehicles on; either to bodily warm-up or to keep their cars warm. This is an advanced warning to all motorist. Expect to be ticketed" Director Ambrose said.
Director Ambrose said the summons coincides with **New Jersey State Motor Vehicle Law 39:3-70.2**, which indicates that all motor vehicles on public or private property cannot idle longer than three minutes or they will be in violation of this statute.
